Alice has spent all her life running with her mother Ella from a strange bad luck that seems to follow them everywhere they go.

When they learn about the death of Alice's grandmother, Althea, author of a cult-book of fairy tales set in the mysterious Hinterland, Alice and Ella hope that finally this will be the beginning of a new life for them in New York.

However, Alice's hopes for a normal life fade when Ella is abducted by a group of people who claim to come from the Hinterland. The only lead is the message left behind by Alice's mother: "stay away from the Hazel Wood".

Alice, helped by her new friend Ellery Finch, a fan of Althea's book, decides to go find her mother, starting from the uncanny Hazel Wood, a place that it is impossible to find on any map and where terrible things seem to happen to those who try to locate it.

The Hazel Wood by Melissa Albert is the first instalment in a urban fantasy trilogy that seems to promise a great adventure.

Enchanted by the beautiful cover design and by the presence of dark fairy tales elements, I started reading this book without any particular expectation… after a few chapters, I found myself completely captivated by the story.

The Hazel Wood is one of those novels that are capable of keeping you up at night, because you need to know what happens next. The thing that I loved the most about this book is the unique way in which the author has structured the storyline: using plot twists and a slow revelation of clues in relation to the main mystery, the Author has been able to keep high the level of suspense for two-thirds of the book, until the truth about Alice and her family is finally unveiled.

I really liked the world-building in the Hazel Wood, with all its doors and passages in and out the Hinterland, and I do really hope that there will be more doors and worlds to discover in the forthcoming instalments.

In The Hazel Wood by Melissa Albert, reality and fairy tales are intertwined in a beautiful, eerie and fascinating mix. When approaching the Hazel Wood and the Hinterland, even the atmosphere becomes more dreamlike and the storytelling rhythm more insistent. It feels like being in one of those nightmares in which no matter how horrible things are, you don't want to wake up, because you need to know how the story ends. In particular, there are some scenes set in the woods preceding the access to the Hinterland, that seem to fade into one another, presenting elements that don't look like they are connected to each other, and instead everything is leading Alice towards the truth about her existence.

The Hazel wood is a coming-of-age novel, in which Alice will be able to discover who she really is and her place in the world: in order to rescue her mother, Alice will be ready to tackle any challenge and face any fate that has been established for her since her birth, proving that no-one but herself is the creator of her own story.

The only critic that I have is about the finale: I found that the ending was too quick compared to the remaining part of the book. I don't know if it was done on purpose, maybe recalling fairy tales endings in which everything ends quickly after having defeated the villain, but I would have liked a few more lines instead of a summary.

That being said, I really loved Alice's story and I have no clue about what it is going to happen next. Can't wait to read The Hazel wood #2.

Oggi torno finalmente attiva sul blog, con tante novità (alcune delle quali le vedrete nelle prossime settimane) e tanta voglia di leggere e raccontarvi le mie avventure libresche!

Alice ha trascorso quasi tutta la sua vita in viaggio insieme a sua madre Ella. La sfortuna sembra infatti perseguitarle ovunque esse vadano, costringendole a spostarsi di città in città ogni volta che qualcosa di spiacevole accade attorno a loro.

Quando giunge loro la notizia della morte della nonna Althea, famosa autrice di un libro cult di fiabe ambientate nel magico mondo dell'Hinterland, Ella e Alice sperano finalmente di potersi stabilire a New York e di iniziare a trascorrere serenamente la propria vita.

The Hazel Wood di Melissa Albert è il primo capitolo di una serie urban fantasy che si preannuncia davvero interessante.

Attratta dalla cover molto particolare e dalla presenza di elementi fiabeschi decisamente dark, ho iniziato il romanzo senza pretese e senza sapere bene cosa aspettarmi… sono bastati pochi capitoli per ritrovarmi completamente coinvolta dalla storia, lasciandomi piacevolmente trascinare dall'incalzante successione degli eventi e dalle citazioni di numerosi romanzi che tutti abbiamo letto e amato.

The Hazel wood è uno di quei romanzi che sanno tenerti incollato dall'inizio alla fine, dosando sapientemente le informazioni svelate nel corso della narrazione. Il più grande pregio di questo libro è infatti la straordinaria costruzione della trama, così ricca di colpi di scena ed indizi più o meno celati, capace di mantenere altissima la suspance e la curiosità per ben due terzi del romanzo, fino alla rivelazione del mistero che si cela dietro alla storia di Alice e della sua famiglia, un segreto intuito e allo stesso tempo inafferrabile.

Il world-building risulta essere piuttosto affascinante: esistono numerose porte/passaggi nascosti verso e fuori l'Hinterland, boschi ricchi di avventure e personaggi magici tutti da scoprire… spero proprio che questi potenziali mondi vengano esplorati ulteriormente nei libri successivi della serie.

In The Hazel Wood di Melissa Albert realtà ed elementi fiabeschi s'intersecano in un mix a tratti inquietante e un po' dark, ma decisamente affascinante. Più ci si avvicina all'Hazel Wood più l'atmosfera si fa onirica e il ritmo del racconto pressante, tanto che a volte si ha l'impressione di trovarsi in uno di quegli incubi in cui accadono cose spaventose, ma dai quali non ci si vuole svegliare perché il bisogno di sapere come proseguirà la storia è più forte della paura. Alcune scene del romanzo sembrano infatti sfumare l'una sull'altra come in un sogno, collegate da elementi che non sembrano essere connessi, ma che invece non fanno altro che condurre Alice (e noi!) sulla strada verso la verità.

The Hazel Wood è anche un romanzo di crescita, di scoperta di se stessi e del proprio posto nel mondo: Alice sarà disposta ad affrontare qualsiasi sfida e qualsiasi destino stabilitò per lei fin dalla nascita pur di salvare sua madre, dimostrando che siamo noi stessi ad essere artefici della nostra storia e nessun altro.

L'unico appunto che mi sento di fare riguarda il finale: l'ho trovato un po' troppo veloce per i miei gusti, soprattutto rispetto allo svolgimento ben dosato dell'intero romanzo. Non so se si tratti di una cosa voluta (avete presente il finale delle fiabe, dove una volta affrontato il cattivo non rimane più niente da dire e ci si affida al classico "e vissero tutti felici e contenti."? Ecco una cosa del genere), ma avrei preferito leggere qualche riga in più rispetto ad un sommario.

Resta il fatto che la storia mi sia piaciuta molto e non vedo l'ora di scoprire cosa accadrà nei prossimi volumi, dato che la storia di Alice sembra essere – al momento – bella che conclusa e non ho assolutamente idea di cosa possa succedere in The Hazel Wood #2.
